The Plano Art Association is partnering with the Historic Downtown Plano Association to launch a new project that will bring the first three murals to the newly designated arts district in the Spring of 2017.
Made possible by a grant from the Plano Heritage Commission, the downtown Mural Project will use visual art to celebrate the city’s rich history, for which the Downtown Plano Arts District was recently formally recognized by the Texas Commission for the Arts.
The downtown mural project begins in January with an open call to artists and a citywide campaign for citizens to submit their historic photos of Plano to be used to inspire the murals’ design and in a future public exhibit held at the Plano Art Association gallery.
The public can submit their historic photos of Plano either online or by having their original photograph digitally transferred for free at the Genealogy Center located in the Haggard Library. The transfer service will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays in January and February from 10am to 2pm.
To assist in the artists open call and overall project management of the mural installations, Plano Art Association has enlisted the help of Joshua King, Dallas-based artist and co-founder of Aurora. An advisory council has also been formed to ensure the historical accuracy and relevance of the murals.
Artists for the mural project will be selected in March with final designs released in early April. Murals will be installed in late spring to a community unveiling celebration.
MURAL LOCATION #1
East facing wall of the Vickery Park building off 15th Place
A natural triptec with its brick columns, mural location one will consist of one master design that will span all three wall panels. The mural will be a painted piece with one panel installed each year. Mural location one is adjacent to the Downtown Plano DART station platform and can be seen by light rail commuters on every train arriving and leaving in and out of the arts district.
MURAL LOCATION #2
East facing wall of the Angela's at the Crosswalk building in the crosswalk passthrough off of 15th Street.
Visible from all westbound traffic entering the arts district on 15th Street, mural location two will be a signature piece in the heart of the neighborhood. The mural will be a relief piece using a sculptural technique where the sculpted elements remain attached to a solid background of the same material.
MURAL LOCATION #3
The location of mural three is currently pending.
All interested artists should go to CAFE and submit their qualifications, a bio, 3 references, a statement of interest and 3 to 5 images of their work before February 10, 2017.
Up to six (6) artists will be selected as finalists to prepare a mural proposal design.
As finalists, each of these artists will be paid a fee of $500.00 to submit these visual design proposals. This will be part of the final selection process. Each proposal requested will relate to one of the specific mural locations.
